Thailand… that’s (almost!) a wrap

Day 9 to Nong Khai…somewhere around 80km ( who knows exactly…devices failed with the heat and the bumps!)

Well that’s Thailand. Made it to the border town of Nong Khai today…This is a rough map of our journey so far 🙂

An uneventful day with plenty of quiet roads, until we hit the highway for the last few kms into Nong Khai- a little daunting but it did have a bike lane of sorts!

A really lovely little guest house here, small room but well priced and cleverly thought out.

And westerners…a few too many of them here! I think we’d become accustomed to communicating with a smile and a spot of Google translate…although admittedly it is pretty awesome to eat something other than noodle soup and packet biscuits 😁

It’s been a huge eye opener over the last 9 days since leaving the comfort and safety of our lovely friends in Siem Reap.

We’ve travelled around 750 km …with more than a few challenges due to to our complete lack of comprehension of the Thai language. Food has been much more difficult than we imagined, with no such thing as “Pad Thai” or “Tom Yum” or “ Green curry” along the route we chose!

Now in Nong Khai…where they clearly cater for the onward travellers, those Thai specialties that we all love are back on the menu. Still plenty of options for noodle soup if we should so choose of course!!

It’s been fascinating watching the changes in the people and the landscape as we’ve travelled north. From the southern looks of astonishment and laughter, we think perhaps the level of wealth increased the further north we went, with many more brief questions in English about where we were heading etc. Still minimal English but it was clear that it is being taught at least to some level in the local schools.

Before we left home we “planned” our trip as far as Vientiane, not knowing how far we’d be able to manage on the bikes each day, how the heat would affect us, and all that jazz. So now we look over the mighty Mekong river to Laos! Tomorrow we will cross the bridge, hopefully find somewhere nice to stop for a couple of days and think about where the next route takes us 🙂

Now let’s see what tomorrow brings!
