Luang Prabang!

Day 17…. 77 km to Luang Prabang

Well we’ve made it. Today’s ride was a lot of up and even more down…and with improving road surfaces it was a bit quicker than we expected.

Bit of shopping along the way

Somewhere along the way we came across another cyclist! It seems it isn’t a terribly common route for cycling (maybe you need to be a little mad) and we’ve seen barely any westerners let alone such a strange phenomenon as a cycle tourist 😂

So we stopped in the middle of the road for a chat with Ben from Germany, who was equally surprised to see another cyclist- and he’s been on the road for a year!

We had planned to camp at a scenic spot on the second descent but with the afternoon still ahead of us we decided to enjoy our cucumbers and stale baguettes with peanut butter while watching the view then push on with the last 32 km to Luang Prabang.

Wound our way through the very bustling streets to a spot that caught our eye in searches “On the Mekong” – a bit of a splurge, we’re going to spend 3 nights here we think. Lovely place- the owner is a US expat, he’s bought up original Laos bungalows and transformed the place into a classy haven. Happy to stop and rest for a couple of days!

A few happy snaps… it’s been an awesome few days of cycling. Tough at times (mostly for me…) on the hills but every bit worthwhile for the spectacular views and the excited faces of the little ones when they spot a Falang! Yeah we do sometimes feel like escaped zoo creatures, apparently we are a spectacle 😎

Anyhow… we’re pretty chuffed to have made it to Luang Prabang. I for one didn’t imagine we’d be able to ride this far- 1139km so far!

We don’t quite know where we’ll head next or from where we’ll fly home- we have a couple of days here in Luang Prabang to explore and figure it out…and a few weeks until we need to be home so stay tuned!
