To Kanchanaburi

Dogs, and more dogs…

Day 31 on the road….93 km and a tiring day for one of us! Quite a bit of mild uphill but probably also the effects of repeated long days… a bit of lethargy for me and a bit of ( well hidden!) frustration for Neil as he had to put up with my slow pace 😁

A nightmarish couple of days with dogs – we had no issues all through Laos and across the top of Thailand. Now in the more rural southern areas it seems that the dogs are in enormous numbers. Very few dogs are desexed and this leads to huge numbers roaming in packs, known in Thailand as soi dogs, and very protective of their patch(es). Adrenalin kicks in pretty quickly when you have bared teeth and flying fur, so far we’ve managed to outride them but gosh…they are scary.

These don’t look too fierce… but still loud and intense! And needless to say… we didn’t stop to take photos of the ones with their teeth showing and chasing us full pelt..

A lovely riverside stop for the night with a surprising little restaurant on the canal edge and superb food!

Day 32…phew! 117 km and a bit light on for photos because we were on a mission to get to Kanchanaburi!

Kanchanaburi… and westerners everywhere you look. In the 7 days since we left Chang Mai we haven’t seen another western person. A few Thais ( and a lovely Burmese guy) who spoke a bit of English, but on the whole we’ve relied on Google Translate to eat, drink and find accommodation! Kanchanaburi, and we’re back in tourist central. We found a place with a pool on the edge of the river…pretty nice and as it seems to have about 90% Western occupancy we guess it appealed to plenty of others too!

A lazy day today ( well for me anyway, Neil did manage to fit in a 6km run but we all know he’s a little insane… 🤪)

The obligatory walk to check out the Bridge over the River Kwai and then we spent a couple of hours at the Death Railway Museum, a fascinating and sombre account of the Burmese/ Thai railway construction and the enormous suffering and loss of life it entailed.

And now it’s poolside… cheers!
