18th July- A big day!
Thought we’d make an early start to try and beat the heat… found some freshly baked baguettes, stuffed with caramelised onion for a unique breakfast experience.
No coffee to be found…it’s character building 💪…
So we’d carefully planned our route using a cycle app- the first 8 km were super smooth and easy…then we turned off as directed onto the “paved road” which was supposed to take us the next 45 km. We now know that “paved” means slightly better than jungle track. 6 Kms in we realised that the road surface was just getting sandier and sandier…and with a loooong way to go we decided to backtrack to the highway.
So back on the tarmac and it was an easy, undulating ( and hot!) cycle to Anlong Veng. Some lovely scenery, several drink stops and a surprisingly delicious bowl of noodles along the way.

Made it to Anlong Veng by 2ish, found a great room, space inside for the bikes, a fan, and the grand total cost of $5 US- perfect!

Where to for some much needed food this evening… it’s lucky dip even with a smattering of Khmer. Fried rice seemed a good option and we randomly picked what looked like a beef dish, hoping it wouldn’t be too heavy on the offal side of things…
Luck was on our side tonight, probably the best meal so far! And we cooked it ourselves 🙂
And now we’re tucked up listening to the heavy rain…first real rain since we got here and boy oh boy it’s lovely and cool!
Tomorrow the plan is to cross the Thai border…
